Top Banana

With the abundance of bananas in the Philippines, my daughter asks, "How come nobody ever makes local banana-flavored ice cream?"

Oo nga naman.

We go bananas over:
• Dairy Queen's Banana Split Blizzard (although it's "banananess" is not consistent.)
• Starbucks Banana Java Frappuccino (summer na ulit, bring it back, please!)
• Blue Bunny's Banana Split Ice Cream for which we make special trips to S&R.
Last summer, Nestle (or was it Magnolia) introduced a triple-flavored ice cream called Banana Split, and it was good but not great. This summer, it's Selecta's turn to offer the sundae-flavors which we have yet to try. But still, it's banana mixed with other flavors. Why can't anybody give the banana due credit and allow it to please its lovers in pure, unadulterated fashion?

This is why for us, the top banana will always be Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey (P239 a pint at S&R/P267 at Shopwise & Rustan's.) This one truly rocks. Every spoonful never fails to send us to banana heaven – super creamy banana goodness with chunks of walnuts and fat slabs of fudge.

With Chunky Monkey, our summer is a few degrees cooler. Our spirits are never saging because it always leaves us piling good.
